Saturday was an early start for staff and students alike, both bearing the icy December morning for a 3:45am start. With the same friendly faces from last year, Westgate boarded the coach and headed for the Dover ferry port. We were lucky enough to board an earlier ferry, which gave us more time to explore the Christmas markets.
The day was spent exploring Lille's Christmas market, buying presents, sampling French cuisines and riding the enormous Ferris Wheel which offered amazing views of the town. We had a great day and although it was tiring, we arrived home full of sugar and in high spirits.
‘This is the second time I have been on the Lille trip and I enjoyed it just as much as the first! The trip gives us the opportunity to: practise our French, indulge in foreign cuisines and discover the customs of an exciting new city. I plan on returning for a third time next year and would recommend the trip to all year levels!’ – Fianna, Year 10 student.
‘The Lille Christmas Markets were full of the festive spirit! The town was blanketed in decorations and the overnight snow topped off the ‘white Christmas’ feel. Not only did we have the opportunity to visit the Christmas market but the surrounding shops (like Saphora) enabled me to sort out some of my Christmas gifts! I would definitely recommend the trip to future years.’ Maisy, Year 10 student.
‘This was my second time attending the Lille Christmas Markets with the Westgate School and I enjoyed it just as much as the first! The students represented Westgate with pride during our travels and really embraced the French culture. The staff enjoyed themselves just as much as the students and I hope next year’s trip is just as enjoyable’. – Miss Martin, English teacher.
