Westgate GCSE Drama students visit the Theatre Royal in Windsor to watch ‘Birdsong’.
On the 28th March 2018 GCSE drama students were excited to meet at the Theatre Royal, Windsor to see Birdsong. This was a stage adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ novel. The action of the play takes place on the Western Front, France between 1916-18 and included flashbacks to 1910. It follows the story of Stephen Wraysford, his experiences in the trenches and his great love affair with Isabelle Azaire.
The students were engrossed throughout this spectacular production and have come away with many new and exciting ideas, which they can apply to their practical and theory work. Many of them were in tears by the end of the play.
“It was like we were really there in the trenches with them.” Gemma, Year 11 student.
“The lighting design was amazing.” Aaron, Year 10 student.
“I am so proud of the students. Several of the theatre staff made a point of coming to tell me how impressed they were with the groups’ behaviour, enthusiasm and engagement. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening!” Ms Slater. Curriculum leader, Drama.
