Women into Engineering Event

Hosted by Mars, a group of Year 10, 11 and 12 girls attended the Aspire Centre event this week.

There are not enough female applicants for jobs in the STEM subjects and particularly Engineering. Mars offers a superb apprenticeship in Engineering and they took time out this week to invite girls from local schools and colleges to learn more about a career in this exciting sector. During the hands-on fun filled day. The girls with current Mars apprentices and learned what it takes to be successful in an FMCG engineering and manufacturing environment. As well as creating a flow diagram of the of the production of a Galaxy bar, there was a task to create a structure to keep an egg safe when dropped from a height using straws and tape. We are proud to report that Westgate girls were the winners of the overall day and they were happy to take away some Mars goodies for their efforts.  On reflection, many of the girls are now considering a career in engineering and we hope they will one day be presenting themselves as a Mars employee to future students!
