Science

Science is the pursuit and application of knowledge and understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on evidence. Science has a huge impact on everyone in our daily life, it is exciting with new discoveries every day.

Within the Science Department we inspire the future generation to achieve their dreams and aspirations and continue to make a difference. Through their application of everyday situations, hands on practical work and problem solving they are able to make links between the real world. Enrichment plays a very important part in Science which helps students to grow while equipping them for life. Students have many enrichment opportunities such as: Salters Festival of Chemistry, BayLab and Lonza ‘Scientist of the Year Competition’.

At Key Stage 3 in Years 7 and 8 students study Biology, Chemistry and Physics following the Exploring Science Programme ‘How Science Works’.

In Year 7, students study a range of topics such as: Organ systems, classification, acids and alkalis, chemical reactions, energy and sustainable living and electrical Circuits.

In Year 8, students build upon the topics from Year 7 and apply themselves further, making connections to their everyday lives. They continue to study a range of topics such as: respiration, microbes and diseases, chemical reactions, light and sound and forces.

At Key Stage 4 students start GCSE Combined Science in Year 9 where they start by completing a maths transition programme of study skills linked to Science including: Quantitative and qualitative data, graph skills, significant figures and percentages. This is followed by studying GCSE Combined Science which consists of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. A range of topics are studies such as: Key concepts in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, genetics, atomic structure and forces and motion.

In Year 10 students will either continue to study for two years GCSE Combined Science or they will study GCSE Separate Science which award GCSE Biology, GCSE Chemistry and GCSE Physics. Students are encouraged to use Active Learn to complete online interactive activities to help reinforce their Knowledge and understanding. Within Science students excel where results have been well above the National average.
