The 16-19 Study Programme

All students funded through the Department for Education’s 16-19 funding methodology must be enroled on a study programme which typically combines qualifications and other activities. The Westgate School 16-19 study offer is designed to provide students with a personalised, structured and challenging learning programme that supports their development and progression in line with their career plans. Study programmes are individually tailored but will typically combine the elements below:

  • A core aim: to achieve 3 A Levels, 3 Applied Level 3 qualifications, or a combination of both which stretch the students and prepare them for education at the next level or for employment.
  • Where students have not yet achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE English and/or Maths: the timetabled study of GCSE English and Maths in order to achieve a Grade 4 in these subjects by the end of their Sixth Form study programme.
  • Work Experience in the Spring Term to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions.
  • Students have the opportunity to apply to complete the EPQ independently with the support of a Supervisor.
  • Non-qualification activities: these are provided to complement the other elements of the programme, which support the students’ character, attitudes, broader skills and confidence to enable them to progress to higher education or employment. These include:
    1. A daily tutorial programme, covering PSHE, Careers and a range of post-16 competencies for personal development (VESPA). Access to ETONX Digital Platform which complements skills and character development.
    2. Weekly assemblies in line with whole school themes and bespoke Sixth Form specific themes.
    3. PSHE workshops which are delivered on key themes by external agencies.
    4. All students receive personal and independent careers and future planning interviews with a clear action plan and targets (Learning To Work).
    5. Independent apprenticeship workshops.
    6. Personal Statement workshops delivered by Higher Education Staff (Oxbridge).
    7. University Taster Day at Royal Holloway University, including Personal Statement workshops and Student Finance support.
    8. Access to Mentoring Support programme (Zero Gravity).
