Accelerated Reader

What is Accelerated Reader?

Accelerated Reader is a software that encourages students to read widely and independently whilst allowing staff to monitor progress and support where necessary. With Accelerated Reader, a student reads a book, takes an online quiz, and gets immediate feedback. Because students receive regular feedback from Accelerated Reader, teachers and librarians are given many opportunities to praise students for their successes and to discuss with them what they have been reading.

How Does it Work?

Every other term Year 7 and Year 8 students complete a Star Reading assessment. Star Reading is a complete online assessment of our students’ reading growth, showing us skills they have mastered which are aligned to the National Curriculum. Star Reading goes even further to show us the skills each student needs to focus on to meet or exceed expected standards. What’s more, Star Reading is computer-adaptive, meaning that it adapts to each student’s abilities.

Through this assessment, we find out a student’s reading level range. This helps us guide students towards books that are an appropriate challenge. Many of the books in the LRC are labelled with a reading level, making it easy for students to find books in their range.

Accelerated Reader in Action

All of our Year 7 and Year 8 students take part in Accelerated Reader lessons at The Westgate School. These lessons consist of 30 minutes spent in our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) once per week where students can choose new books, read silently and read aloud to their English teachers.

During these lessons, students can also complete a book’s online quiz once they have finished reading. We adjust a student’s reading level based on the outcome of their book quiz. If a student achieves a score of 80% or higher on a quiz, they earn a prize. Students can also win prizes by passing multiple quizzes in a row and reading a range of different genres, encouraging them to not only make progress in reading difficulty but in expanding their book selection.

Students can complete book quizzes from home by going to Westgate’s Renaissance Homepage.

Parents can track their child’s reading activity and quiz progress through Renaissance Home Connect.
