Duke of Edinburgh
Duke of Edinburgh Coordinator - Mr R.Barber.
The Duke of Edinburgh award is a national run charity with the aim of developing young people and the skills they have. The Westgate School has delivered the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award successfully for many years. This year we will be offering the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh award to Year 9 students and the Silver Duke of Edinburgh award to Year 10 and 12 students who have previously successfully completed the Bronze award.
Students, over the course of 6 months to a year, set objectives in each of the following areas:
- Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community.
- Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities.
- Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests.
- Expedition: planning, training for and completion of an adventurous journey in the UK or abroad.
The objectives that are selected are an opportunity for students to try something new or to develop further interests they already have.
This year we are hoping to setup a World Challenge expedition to Borneo and Malaysia for the summer of 2020. This is a really exciting opportunity where after raising the money to go on the trip themselves, students will be involved in trekking, volunteering and various other activities in Borneo and Malaysia. This is an opportunity for students from the current Year 10, 11 and 12 to immerse themselves in a culture they would not normally experience.
