Entry Requirement

GCSE English Literature - Level 5

In Year 12 and 13:

You will study ALL the texts for Component 1 of the A Level. These include:

  • Drama and Poetry pre 1900 exam. 60 marks 40% of qualification. Closed book exam. Texts studied for this are Hamlet, Rossetti poetry and The Duchess of Malfi.
  • Comparative and contextual study exam. 60 marks. 40% of qualification. Closed book exam. Texts studied for this are Dracula and The Bloody Chamber.
  • Coursework - close reading and comparative essay. Texts studied for this are The Kite Runner, Duffy poetry and Blood Brothers. the coursework is 40 marks and worth 20%.

There are five assessment objectives in the OCR A Level in ‘English Literature’. Learners are expected to demonstrate their ability to:

Articulate informed, personal and creative responses to literary texts, using associated concepts and terminology, and coherent, accurate written expression.

Analyse ways in which meanings are shaped in literary texts.

Demonstrate understanding of the significance and influence of the contexts in which literary texts are written and received.

Explore connections across literary texts.

AO5

Explore literary texts informed by different interpretations.

 

The Future

With an earned degree in Literature, you have a number of career options. For example, approximately 50% of writers and editors start out in the information sector to include book, newspaper, periodical, and directory publishers. Following that is television and radio broadcasting, motion picture and screenplays, software publishers, Internet service providers, web search portals, data processing services, and other related online services.
