Health & Social Care
Health and Social Care
“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.”
-Leo Buscagila
American author and motivational speaker.
The health and social care sector is a major employer of almost 4 million people in the UK, many of which are highly skilled. Almost 1.7 million job openings are expected over the period to 2020. It also makes a vital contribution to all other aspects of the economy and society by creating a healthy and productive workforce and by caring for the ageing and the vulnerable. Services provided by the sector will touch every individual and family in the UK - A practical and vocational qualification. With this in mind we try to deliver as practically as possible with an insight into the “real” workings of health and social care. Study of the BTEC Tech Award will help learners make more informed choices for further learning either generally or in this sector. Learners who achieve at Level 2 can use this qualification to progress to A Levels or study a vocational qualification at Level 3.
Students will study to achieve the Pearson BTEC Level 2 Tech Award in Health and Social Care. It gives learners the opportunity to develop sector-specific knowledge and skills in a practical learning environment. Throughout the two year course students will focus on three main areas which cover:
- Skills and processes, such as interpreting data to assess an individual’s health, and designing a plan to improve their health and well-being
- Attitudes, namely the care values that are vitally important in the sector, and the opportunity to practise applying them
- Knowledge that underpins the effective use of skills, processes and attitudes, including human growth and development, health and social care services, and factors affecting people’s health and wellbeing
Students are assessed through coursework based assignments and a controlled assessment. We aim to make the content of the lessons as current and real as possible, completing practical activities and inviting people from the health and social care sector to discuss their roles and responsibilities.
