Learning Resource Centre

No ordinary library!

Our Learning Resource Centre (LRC) supports teaching and learning across the whole school and provides a welcoming space for students and staff alike. The LRC offers a comfortable study area, a growing catalogue of print and electronic resources that support the curriculum, and provides books, ebooks, and audiobooks that facilitate literacy development, reading for pleasure, and independent learning.

In the LRC, you’ll find our corps of dedicated and inclusive student librarians, Duke of Edinburgh volunteers, and our weekly Chess Club. We support a number of our Year 7 students with their reading development through our Read Aloud program while engaging all of Year 7 and Year 8 with reading through our Accelerated Reader program.

Outside of school, students can search our catalogue of resources through our Reading Cloud database and our comprehensive collection of ebooks and audiobooks are available through the Sora app.

Opening Times

The LRC is open from 8.15am to 3:30pm on Mondays, 8.15am to 4pm Tuesday through Thursday, and 8.15am to 3.45pm on Fridays and is staffed by our LRC Manager (Ms Mulligan) and our LRC Assistant (Mrs Mansbridge).  The LRC is open to staff and students before school, during break and lunch times, and after school. Sixth formers are also welcome to quietly study in the LRC during free periods through the day.

OverDrive ebooks and Sora

The Learning Resource Centre (LRC) at The Westgate School has a wide range of resources available to students and staff alike. From 19th century novels, to revision guides and graphic novels, there’s something for everyone and our selection has expanded even further!

The LRC’s Reading Cloud now includes OverDrive books! OverDrive is a digital distributor of ebooks and audiobooks which students can access anywhere, anytime through OverDrive’s Sora app.

On Sora, students will find hundreds of premium, simultaneous-use titles including classics like Call of the Wild and Hamlet and student favourites such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Students are able to browse and borrow this great range of age-appropriate ebooks and audiobooks by simply downloading the app or logging in at Sora app with their school credentials.

Accelerated Reader

To encourage reading for pleasure, we support the implementation of Accelerated Reader where students can read a book at their pre-determined level, complete a quiz for their book and carry on moving through levels, thus accelerating their literacy development.

Year 7 and 8 students attend weekly Accelerated Reader lessons in the LRC via their English lessons and spend this time quietly reading, choosing a new book, and taking book quizzes. Completing book quizzes is an integral part of Accelerated Reader as it helps staff track students’ progress through the school year and also gives students the opportunity to win prizes and accolades for their accomplishments.

Students can complete book quizzes from home by going to Westgate’s Renaissance Homepage.

Parents can track their child’s reading activity and quiz progress through Renaissance Home Connect.

Happy reading!
