Expansion of The Westgate School
The success of The Westgate School has meant that demand for places from parents and children of the local community has increased significantly over the last few years. Unfortunately, the school in its present size was unable to accommodate the increasing demand. The decision was therefore made by the governing body in 2016 to expand the school in order that children from the Cippenham area could be afforded the opportunity to attend the school if they so wished.
Working in partnership with architects, Re-Format, and Slough Borough Council, plans were drawn up for a building to house a large multi-purpose hall and brand new sixth form centre. A second building would consist of purpose built accommodation for the Art and Media department and seven multi-purpose classrooms. In addition, refurbishment to existing buildings to improve the accommodation in Science and Mathematics would be undertaken. The driving force behind the layout of the proposed buildings has been a desire to provide an excellent array of diverse teaching environments. The design is adaptable to suit different needs and will aid learning styles both for large groups and individuals. Spaces will be of different scales with good daylighting and animated interior finishes to create distinct zones that relate to the pupils and stimulate their minds.
After a successful planning application and subsequent tender process, Feltham Construction were selected as the main contractors. They began construction on site in July 2017 and will complete all works by July 2018.
So September 2018 will see the first increased cohort of 240 Year 7 students beginning their academic career at The Westgate School. Ultimately, the school will become an eight form entry secondary school providing 1,200 school places for 11-16 year olds and an additional 150 places for post-16 education.
Steel Signing Ceremony
Susan Rose, head teacher, said: “The steel signing ceremony marked an exciting milestone in the extension of our school and was a great opportunity for everyone to see the fantastic progress that has already been made on site.
“The children and staff were thrilled to get a glimpse of what they can expect next year as they have been watching the development of the new site with great interest and are delighted to be gaining spacious new facilities in which to learn and teach.
“We look forward to seeing the completion of the project next year, which will provide a wonderful learning environment for the students of The Westgate School.”
