Religious & Moral Studies

We aim to create global citizens equipped to assess received opinion and make independent judgments. Pupils who are aware of the past, present, and future of the world around them. In Religious Studies pupils gain an insight into how others view the world and develop an understanding of how people’s beliefs shape the world in which they live. They investigate philosophy and ethics to allow them to become self-aware and able to come to informed opinions.

Religious Studies lessons focus on developing a knowledge rich student. Pupils should experience a curriculum that sequentially builds up deep understanding of topics. One in which knowledge is not merely encountered but comprehended and remembered. This is ensured through consistent application of retrieval practice principles and to ensuring that pupils are equipped with the language to engage with topics in a meaningful way.

In Religious Studies students will study various religions with a focus on developing three key skills

1: Exegesis: Students will engage directly with religious texts and be able to place faiths within their social and historical context.

2: Contextualisation of Faith: Students will explore ideas of culture vs religion and understand the interaction of the two.

3: Critical Realism: Students will be able to confidently evaluate truth claims made by different faiths. Consistent exposure to the beliefs of others will widen personal perspectives by encouraging students to learn both about and from alternative faiths.

Students develop an understanding of how the world has come to be as it is and how this impacts on current and future developments.
