'What Next?' - Year 10 Careers Workshop

Year 10 students were tasked with steeping up to Year 11 early this week!  The 'Careers Planning' and 'What next?' Workshops saw students thinking about three key take-aways: Things to Do, People to Impress, Decisions to Make

Students learnt that they will be required to achieve 5 x grade 5’s in their subjects to qualify for Sixth Form and that some subjects will require grade 6’s.  They learnt what College life looks like and found out about the superb new T Level courses that see them working in industry for 45 days per each year of their courses. It was a shock for some to realise that if they don’t reach grades 4 in English and Maths, it means that they will repeat those subjects wherever they go after GCSE’s. The most important request from Mrs Green, Careers Leader was for students to check their school emails every day so that they don’t miss offers of numerous opportunities, and to use their www.Unifrog.org accounts at least every week to research their post 16 options.

Following the session, students have been sending messages and questions including:I really liked the session, and it gave me a wider view on the options I could do after year 11. I'm really interested in have a career or education in criminology, would you have any links that would help me be able to explore that area?”

Year 11 will have numerous careers related learning starting with the School Leavers Show at Ascot in November, where they will meet employers, Apprenticeship providers, Colleges and T Levels experts. They will have a mock interview in October with a business volunteer, CV Writing, Interview Skills and Competencies workshops, and subject-specific employers to talk to them about the workplace.

We are proud to be supported by our wonderful Westgate Alumni students who come back into school to support careers, and the impact of hearing from ex Westgate students always sparks some inspiration for year 11.
