Graphics students learn about Point of Sale displays to enrich their GCSE course.
During this term, students from the Year 10 Graphics GCSE course and Mr Strydom worked with Scott Green, Mars' Display Executive. Scott's daily job is to work with Mars customers including the big 5 supermarkets to plan their sales displays for all Mars chocolate brands.
Westgate students were given the opportunity to come up with a new product within the most popular Galaxy, M & M's and Snickers brands. Once the students got the grips with the terminology re 'branding' 'variants' and 'POS', they embraced their tasks with great energy and enthusiasm. Three teams were formed and they were lucky to be invited over to Mars on two occasions as well as in lesson time to work with Scott and learn from his expertise.
We were all blown away with the final ideas and the excellent display units that were presented to the Brand Managers during the final session at Mars. Strawberry Snickers with Hazelnuts, Galaxy Marbles and Caramel Maltesers were showcased in vibrant and professional units. The judges were impressed with the speed in which the students completed this creative and considered project. The winning team were the Galaxy Marbles.
"Working with Mars to enrich the curriculum has been a good way of engaging our students with the 'real' working world. I am proud of our students and the way that they embraced the Display Project, and I also learned more about how displays make such an impact on the sales of confectionery", said Mr Strydom, Graphics teacher.
"I enjoyed working with Scott and going to Mars" said Ryan Reid, "it really taught me how companies work and what they have to do when they are selling their products".
Westgate would like to thank Scott and the brand managers for their time and efforts on our student's behalf.
