Employability and Recruitment Programme 2019

Year 11 CV Writing and Interview Skills

As Year 11 embark on the busiest school year so far, and prepare for their life after Westgate, we were delighted to introduce them to employment and recruitment processes. Starting with Core Competencies, we delivered a session centred around team work, problem solving, communication etc. Students were able to understand how employers screen them during the recruitment process and how they are measured by their ‘soft’ skills. Next came the arduous task of preparing their first ever CV, the hardest part of any job search is having the CV ready and relevant to the application.

Friday 25th October was National Make a Difference Day,  and we were joined by 23 business volunteers who kindly gave up their time to spend the day meeting our students and going through their CV’s and interview skills. Year 11 were nervous and apprehensive when they reported for their interview time slot and they looked amazing in their ‘business’ attire. The interviewers were impressed with students’ pre-interview preparation and research. Feedback was given both verbally and in post interview notes and included suggestions on how to improve their CV’s going forward. Upon exiting the hall after the interview, students seemed to be 10 feet tall and very proud to have ‘survived’!

Karen Green, Careers Leader said “This will be the first time that Year 11 have considered what it’s like to try and find a job, and this whole process throughout the first half term was intense. We were pleased that the students embraced the programme and wanted to impress us all”
